Socket welded Pipe Fittings are a group of high-pressure pipe fittings used in various industrial production processes. It refers to a pipe connection method in which pipes are inserted into valves, pipe fittings or flanges. Its characteristic is that it is used to transport non-leakage flammable media, toxic or expensive media, and steam from 300PSI to 600PSI, which are only connected with ASME pipelines with the same caliber. It is used for permanent pipeline work and provides better flow characteristics. Socket welding refers to a pipe connection method in which pipes are inserted into valves, pipe fittings or flanges. Compared with butt welding, socket welding is usually used for small diameter pipes of 2 inches or less.

Fillet welds are used for socket welding. When high structural strength requirements and high leakage risk become design considerations, socket welded joints are a better choice. The fatigue strength of socket welded joints is lower than that of butt welded joints because of the use of fillet welds and the steep changes in geometry. However, socket welding joints are still superior to other mechanical connection joints. It is used for permanent pipeline work and provides better flow characteristics. Its material is ASTM material, and its manufacturing standard is ASME B16.11. B16.11 covers pressure-temperature ratings, dimensions, tolerances, markings, and material requirements for carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy steel. The material forms of the optional materials are forgings, round bars, and seamless tubes. Commonly used materials are ASTM A105, A182 or A350. There are three pressure levels for socket welded pipe fittings: CLASS3000, 6000 and 9000. The pipe does not need to be prefabricated. It is not necessary to calibrate the spot welding, because the pipe fitting itself performs the calibration function.

The welding material will not penetrate into the pipe hole. It can replace threaded pipe fittings, so the risk of leakage is reduced. Fillet welds are not suitable for radiographic inspection, so correct pipe fittings and welding are critical. Fillet welds are commonly used for surface inspection by magnetic particle inspection and penetration inspection. The construction cost is usually lower than butt-welded joints. The reason is that there is no need for groove group pairing and groove prefabrication. The welder must ensure a 1.6mm welding expansion gap between the pipe and the socket shoulder during welding. The existence of cracks inside welding gaps and socket welds reduces the corrosion resistance or radiation resistance of the pipeline. When solid particles accumulate at the socket welding joint, it may cause failures in the operation and maintenance of the pipeline. In this case, a full penetration butt weld is usually required for the entire pipeline.
